My approach

My paintings are inspired by landscapes, but I work to evoke sensations rather than tangible realities. The process for me is about finding rather than making - an exploration beginning with often chaotic, gestural mark-making and brush-work and gradually simplifying the imagery, fusing ideas and feelings through layers of paint and ink and letting the past live beneath the surface. I don’t have a preconceived idea of how the finished work will look.  Rather, my aim is to find intuitively a hybrid kind of visual order that resonates – to create a space for viewers to immerse themselves in, allowing room for the unknown and the inexplicable.

Mostly I use mixed media and mixed methods, including acrylic (with lots of clear medium), ink and Conte crayon, and develop the work through semi-transparent layering, or wet-on-wet brushwork, or through print-making techniques, or combinations of these, while shaping and punctuating with line and gestural marks.

Artistic influences are wide a varied, including the expressionism of artists like Richard Diebenkorn and Ivon Hitchens, the “informalism” of Antoni Tàpies and Nicolas de Staël, colour field painters like Helen Frankenthaler and Mark Rothko, and the visual culture of the First Nations peoples.

My Story

I started studying at art school in England in the 1970s. Didn't finish.  Travelled. Ended up in Aotearoa New Zealand. Started painting again about 25 years ago.  Can't think why I dropped it in the first place. Exhibited widely in Aotearoa New Zealand. Moved to NSW in 2015. Now exhibiting regularly in Australia - including at the Affordable Art Fairs in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane with the CAL. Collective - and occasionally across the Tasman. Finalist in the Melbourne-based Camberwell Art Show Award,  the Sydney-based open Greenway Art Prize (3 times), the Hunter’s Hill Art Prize (twice), the Harden Landscape Art Prize, and the John Villiers Outback Art Prize.

“If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”
